Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) is officially a free man after charges against him were dropped following the discovery of Vernon’s (Malik Yoba) body on Fox’s “Empire.” However, another Lyon family member would become a prisoner in the shocking final minutes of episode 5, “Be True.

Episode 5 begins with the news breaking Lucious will no longer be charged with murder. As this news breaks, Andre (Trai Byers) returns to Empire in the role of president. Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) is working with Tiana (Serayah) when she finds out about Lucious, and Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) introduces his new singer Laura (Jamila Velazquez) to Tiana so she can show her around.

Andre goes to see his the Rev. L.C. Price (Charles Malik Whitfield) and says he’s ready to be baptized. The reverend tells him he needs to confess all of his sins to his family before he can do that. Andre breaks the news to Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) that he plans to get baptized. He tells her he’s going to tell them his sins and ask for forgiveness and she worries he’ll confess to them about Vernon.

While at Cookie’s studio, Tiana gets mugged by two women she thinks are fans and they steal her bag. Cookie says they’ve been marked and people from the streets are going to try to take money from them. After this Cookie meets with concert promoter Laz Delgado (Adam Rodriguez), who’s aware of the fact that the street thinks Cookie has money and what happened with Tiana. He promises he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty to help.

Lucious and Cookie talk about Vernon as they grab his ashes from the funeral home. Cookie asks if he killed Vernon and Lucious tells her he didn’t. Cookie asks how they can keep safe and Lucious says that’s what happens when he’s not protecting them. This leaves Cookie to believe that Lucious was behind what happened to Tiana.

Andre goes looking Lucious and finds Thirsty (Andre Royo) in his office. Lucious is off, but Thirsty is working on a few things as he’s been given Vernon’s old role in the company. He wants Andre to steal Lyon Dynasty’s masters and Andre tells him never to ask him to disrespect his mother and has Thirsty leave Lucious’ office.

Hakeem tries making a move on Laura while they party, but she says she’s not one of those girls. Hakeem apologizes to Laura and says he respects her. He wants her to share her voice with the world and she forgives him.

Cookie and Laz are hanging out when two burglars break in to try and steal her master recordings. Laz tackles one, while Cookie hold a gun up to the other. They find out Thirsty sent the two there to steal and plant wires, but Cookie doesn’t want any police.

Andre admits his sins to Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and Hakeem, including when Jamal almost got shot at the ghetto record label. Hakeem and Jamal are upset, but they forgive him. Hakeem says he’ll go, but Jamal isn’t sure if he can because of the church's beliefs against homosexuals.

Lucious tells Andre he needs to check his faith at the door and the commandments he should follow at Empire are Lucious.’ Andre admits that when Cookie got out of jail he convinced Cookie to blackmail him and produce Jamal. He also admits that he almost killed himself in the studio, but then he found God. Lucious tells Andre there is no God and he needs to man up because being baptized won’t wipe away his sins.

Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) enters the studio and struggles at first until Lucious reminds her of her father. Freda then starts to feel her music and Lucious begins to have a change of heart about not going to Andre’s baptism after he’s moved by Freda.

Andre and Cookie share a moment before his baptism and she says she’s proud of him. Jamal decides to go too in a moment that shows despite all the drama between them they’re still there for each other at the end of the day because they’re family. Cookie doesn’t think Lucious will show because if he walks in the whole place might catch fire.

Lucious changes his mind and goes to Andre’s baptism. Cookie rips Lucious when he sits next to her for trying to spy on her and steal her masters. When Andre starts to get baptized, Lucious is reminded of a bad childhood memory when his mother was dunking him in a bathtub. Lucious gets up and leaves, as Andre watches him walk out.

The episode comes to a shocking close when Hakeem is running through a park when he’s suddenly grabbed by the thugs that have been harassing Cookie and Lyon Dynasty. They tell him they weren’t messing around, as they throw a black bag over his head and throw him in the back of a van.
