With rising energy costs, home buyers are increasingly aware of

energy efficiency and other environmentally friendly features of homes.

Forty-three percent of recent buyers considered a home's heating and

cooling costs very important.

  • In fact, heating and cooling costs were considered very important

    by the largest share of home buyers across all regions, ranging from 47

    percent in the Northeast to 38 percent in the West.


  • Energy efficient appliances were a very important consideration for

    26 percent of buyers. A comparable percentage viewed energy efficient

    lighting as very important also.


  • Energy efficient appliances and lighting along with landscaping and

    environmentally friendly community features were cited as very

    important by more buyers in the South and West than elsewhere.
