KEY POINTS

  • England pulls off a 2-0 victory over Germany at Euro 2020
  • Kane and Sterling leads the way, thanks to Jack Grealish's stellar playmaking
  • The win puts England in the quarter-finals against Ukraine

England breaks through with two goals to beat Germany and book a trip to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.

In a moment that England fans will cherish forever, the Three Lions have advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2012.

Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling broke the scoring drought at the 75th minute for both sides off a seemingly empty possession in the midfield and then quick, accurate passes in the frontline allowed him to get the ball past longtime Germany keeper Manuel Neuer.

Thomas Muller had an opportunity to tie the game up a little after Sterling’s goal, but his shot just went a bit wide to the left of English keeper Jordan Pickford.

At the 81st minute, Jack Grealish placed a cross from the top of the box and Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored his first goal in the Euro with the header in the middle of the box to put England up by two goals to none.

The Three Lions seemingly have fortune back on their side as they look to win it all this time around.

For England manager Gareth Southgate, the win was a vindication for his Euro 1996 performance against, ironically, Germany.

Alan Shearer scored in the first three minutes to give England the lead, but German striker Stefan Kuntz scored a goal a little later to tie the game up.

The game went on to a penalty shootout after neither team was able to score. Both teams were able to make their first five kicks, but Southgate’s attempt in the sixth round was saved, which allowed Andreas Möller to win it all.

“For the teammates who played with me, I can’t change that – so that’s always going to hurt. But what this group of players has been able to do is give a new generation a lot of happy memories and another afternoon where they have made a bit of history,” Southgate said after the win.

The English national team has yet to win the Euros since the tournament’s inception all the way back to 1960.

They are riding a wave of momentum off the amazing play of Sterling and Grealish.

Kane’s first goal in the tournament has definitely brought back his confidence and he’ll look to capitalize on this opportunity by hopefully scoring another goal against Ukraine.

England is set to face Ukraine in the quarterfinals on July 3. A win would put them in the semi-finals against the winner between the Czech Republic and Denmark.
