George Hotz, a 21-year-old hacker known as Geohot online, has been hired by Facebook.

An unnamed Facebook spokeswoman confirmed in an email statement to the LA Times tech blog that George is employed at Facebook. Facebook later confirmed the news to several other publications, including CNET sister site ZDNet.

The Washington Post reported there was speculation that he's working on building an upcoming Facebook iPad app.

George Hotz first became well known for jailbreaking the iPhone in 2007. Later, he also jailbroke the PlayStation 3 and allowed users to run unauthorized software on it.

Sony sued Hotz for posting details regarding the process of jail breaking the Playstation 3 online. The case was settled outside the court and the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Facebook was apparently impressed enough with Hotz' hacking skills to give him a job.
