Fans of “American Idol” have mixed reactions over reports that the reality TV show may be revived by NBC.

According to Variety, the network is seriously contemplating on renewing the first singing reality competition to have ever been released in the United States. If “American Idol” will get the green light from the network, NBC will cut down the number of seasons of “The Voice” per year. Typically, NBC releases three seasons of “The Voice,” but this will be cut down to just two to give way to “American Idol.”

“American Idol” aired on FOX for a total of 15 seasons. In 2002, the reality show averaged 12 million viewers. The show gained even more popularity in the coming years, with Season 5 averaging 30 million viewers. However, the success of “American Idol” was shortlived. After the original judges left to show and new ones were tapped to take their place, “American Idol” suddenly had a different format. During its final season, the show only averaged 9.1 million viewers.

Meanwhile, “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest already hinted on the possible renewal while at the Television Critics Association press tour last year. “When you’ve got a franchise that has this kind of heritage and you’ve got a franchise that generates X amount of millions of people, if it sustains, does that mean it’s the end? I’m not so sure,” he said, via TV Line.

Unfortunately, some fans of the original “American Idol” are not excited over the revival news. Some fans think that Season 15 should be the last for the franchise. Others believe that “American Idol” should only be revived if the original judges will return. On the other hand, some fans are also looking forward to watching the reality TV competition on NBC soon.
