In the first eight months of the year the Fiat brand had a 7.2 percent market share, up from 6.6 percent in the same period a year earlier, the European vehicle makers association ACEA said earlier on Tuesday.

We have increased volumes (in Europe) by more or less 1 percent. I hope to continue in this way, Sistino said on the sidelines of a news conference at the motor show.

I hope to finish the year with a market share in Europe above, in line, above 7 percent, he said.

The Fiat brand produces a range of cars including the Grande Punto, Panda and compact city car the 500 model.

Looking further ahead, Sistino said: The (European) market next year is totally unpredictable. I think probably that in France the market will remain more or less at the same level.

At 1016 GMT, Fiat was up 0.45 percent at 8.8650 euros, outperforming the Eurostoxx auto and parts index .SXAP which was down 0.59 percent. (Reporting by Jo Winterbottom; Writing by Nigel Tutt; Editing by Jon Loades-Carter)
