Hocus Pocus
"Hocus Pocus" is without a doubt one of the greatest cult classic films to date. Here are five reasons why. MySpace.com

Hocus Pocus is my favorite cult classic.

It should rank up there with other greats like Office Space and Napoleon Dynamite.

It is also, without a doubt, the best Halloween-themed movie to date (scary movies included, sorry Michael Myers).

There is even a Facebook fan page entitled Hocus Pocus is the World's Greatest Cult Classic that agrees.

Hocus Pocus stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. It is about three witches who were sentenced to death 300 years ago but come back one Halloween to gain immortal life. They turn their wrath on some adorable trick-or-treaters and a black cat.

Halloween gold.

Why do I give Hocus Pocus such high praise, you ask?

Here are five reasons.

1. This is Sarah Jessica Parker at her best. Of course I loved her in Sex & the City (mainly because of her clothes). But in Hocus Pocus, Parker is genius, albeit annoying. Her character, Sarah Sanderson, uses her siren-like abilities to lure victims with her Come Little Children song. Parker is supposed to be the sexy witch but she does not play to this role. Trying to hard would have made the role fall flat. Instead, she is kooky and ditzy. It is Parker in her prime.

2. Do you find yourself quoting things like I always wanted a child. And now I think I'll have one. ON TOAST! or Why was I cursed with such IDIOT sisters?! Just lucky I guess? Regardless of how you answer that question, people do actually still recite quotes from Hocus Pocus even today. Why? Because the lines are great! Some might say cheesy, others might say comedy. The quotes live on and are useful all-year round. So next time your friend annoys you just say,HAG! There aren't enough children in the world to make thee young and beautiful!

3. The soundtrack is terrible. But, It is one of those it's so bad it's good. When Bette Midler sings I Put a Spell On You at a high school dance you know it is going to be good.

4. Hocus Pocus first opened in theaters on July 16, 1993 (not quite sure why they chose July). That weekend, it opened at number four in the box office and grossed $8,125,471. But only three weeks later, it fell to just $2,017,688. It received terrible reviews from critics as well. The Miami Herald bashed it saying it was a pretty lackluster affair and despite the triple-threat actress combo, 'Hocus Pocus' won't be the 'Sister Act' of 1993. There are a lot of gotta-sees this summer, and this isn't one of them. But 18 years later, the film has developed a decidedly adoring cult following. ABC Family plays it every year during their 13 Nights of Halloween and its Facebook page has over 284,000 likes.

5. There is an official Hocus Pocus drinking game. Well, sort of. There are actually a lot of Hocus Pocus drinking games. For a movie that was made in 1993, that says something! The game from the 2birds1blog blog includes rules like drink every time Sarah Jessica Parker sings, every time Yabos are mentioned, and every time Max is referred to as Hollywood.

Hocus Pocus airs Oct. 21 on the ABC Family channel at 7:00 p.m. EST.
