Candice Patton as Iris
Grant Gustin talked about Barry (Gustin) and Iris’ (Candice Patton) future following their called-off engagement in Season 3, episode 15 of “The Flash.” The CW

“The Flash” star Grant Gustin was a little disappointed when he found out that the engagement between his character, Barry, and Candice Patton’s Iris was not meant to last.

At the very end of Season 3, episode 14 of the CW series, Barry popped the big question to Iris with a sparkling three-stone diamond ring that once belonged to his great grandmother. Iris accepted his proposal in a heartbeat, and the couple shared the news with everyone in Season 3, episode 15.

Later that episode, however, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) found out that Barry proposed to Iris not purely out of love, but as an attempt to alter the future and ultimately avert her murder at Savitar’s (voiced by Tobin Bell) hands. Wally’s discovery led Iris to call off the engagement — a twist that Gustin wasn’t exactly happy about.

“I actually liked the proposal!” Gustin told TVLine with a laugh. “I thought it was really pretty. [So] it was hard to be like, ‘Annnnnd this is where were going next with the storyline.’ I was like, ‘We just did the proposal and it was great!”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gustin explained why he loved Barry’s proposal. “It’s really sweet because it’s not too over-the-top and I like what Barry talks about,” the 27-year-old actor said. “He’s giving a really detailed story about where the ring came from that had belonged to his mom and just the whole story behind it, which I thought was a really sweet thing to focus on for a proposal.”

Although Iris called off the engagement, Grant Gustin is hopeful that there will be a moment in the future where Barry will ask Iris to marry him one more time.

“The circumstances don’t even need to change,” Gustin told TVLine when asked what would need to be different for Barry to pop the question again. “There’s a lot going on right now that is literally life-or-death, and I think that is clouding everything and getting in the way of their relationship. All of the relationships are kind of in a weird place right now, just because everyone is scared. I think [Barry and Iris] just need to find some clarity. They need to trust their love, and be brave enough to believe in the relationship.”

An all-new episode of “The Flash” (Season 3, episode 16) airs on Tuesday, March 14 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
