Team Flash is getting a new leader!

With Barry (Grant Gustin) still locked up in the Speed Force six months after the events in the Season 3 finale, Iris (Candice Patton) will temporarily take Barry’s place as the leader of the team in the upcoming Season 4 of “The Flash.”

“We do get to see a different version of Iris,” Patton told With An Accent TV during Wednesday’s 43rd Saturn Awards when asked what fans can expect from her character when the show returns this fall. “She’s a little harder. She’s without the love of her life. [And] she’s kind of had to step into this role as the leader of the Flash team.”

At the end of Season 3 finale, Central City got hit by a series of earthquakes, which were caused by instability in the Speed Force after Jay (John Wesley Shipp) was freed from it. As Team Flash tried to figure out what to do, the Speed Force — appearing as Barry’s mom Nora (Michelle Harrison) — suddenly popped up before them and invited Barry to fill the void. No one from the team wanted Barry to go, but he realized that this was his penance for causing all of the trouble. Before joining “Nora” in the Speed Force, Barry made Iris promise that she’ll keep living and loving without him. When he entered the breach, the Speed storm stopped.

Plot details about the upcoming season are being kept under wraps, but sources told TVLine earlier this month that the villain Barry and his team will face next season is none other than Clifford DeVoe, a.k.a. The Thinker.

Executive producers Todd and Aaron Helbing also revealed at PaleyFest last March that they are planning to dial down the time travel and alternate reality concepts in Season 4. “We haven’t really talked that much about Season 4 yet, but I don’t think we’re going to do as much time traveling,” Todd said.

“We like playing with the timelines and the different time periods and future and past. [But] for now, I think we’re going to focus on the present,” added Aaron.

“The Flash” Season 4 will premiere on Tuesday, Oct 10 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
