One of the exciting new additions to Fox’s show “Gotham” is the Mad Hatter, to be played by “The Walking Dead” star Benedict Samuel.

It is already a well-known fact that the Mad Hatter, also known as Jervis Tetch, will be in Gotham City to search for his sister Alice (Naian Gonzales Norvind) because he wants to have access to her powers.

“His purpose is to find his sister and I think he’ll move hell and high earth to find her,” Samuel told Zap2it.

Given his selfish desires to find his sister, it comes as no surprise that Alice does not want to be found. Samuel also said that it’s very difficult to describe his character because “there are so many pieces to him.”

“There’s a child in there and there’s also a psychopath,” he added.

So when it comes to playing the character, Samuel relied on what his acting teacher taught him. “A helpful thing for me has always been — this is from a great acting teacher Declan Donnellan — is this beautiful way of expressing how and why people do things that other people may not do,” Samuel said. “It’s a simple sentence that says, ‘I understand you, you don’t understand me.’ I feel the Mad Hatter certainly operates in that way.”

Jervis reportedly has the ability to manipulate people’s minds. He was described by Entertainment Weekly as “a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness.”

Meanwhile, Comic Book has provided a first glimpse of the Mad Hatter’s mysterious lair, which is filled with clocks, chairs and all sorts of knick-knacks.

There are creepy dolls and mannequins hanging all over the place, while dollhouses and chess pieces adorn the lair. There are also tasty desserts such as cakes and teas on his table, but the vibe of his place is anything but inviting.

“Gotham” will return on Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. on Fox.
