The Joker (Cameron Monaghan) has a huge arc with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) in "Gotham" Season 3. Fox

The Joker is back in “Gotham,” and Cameron Monaghan, the actor who plays him, is excited for fans to see his big face-off with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz).

“We have a big arc playing off each other in this season, these few episodes,” Monaghan revealed to Observer. “There was a lot of give-and-take between us, and most of it wasn’t rehearsed. There was some stuff that had to be rehearsed, there’s a big set-piece fight, a big physical confrontation that obviously had to be planned ahead of time.”

It’s no secret that the Joker will become one of Batman’s biggest nemeses in the future, but it would be interesting to see how a young Batman-in-the-making would interact with the villain.

Monaghan said he really had to get into character, and he appreciated how Mazouz went along with his performance. “I’d show up on the day, as Jerome [Valezka], and he had to trust that if I would choose to grab him – sometimes I’d grab him by the face or by the coat collar or something – he was okay giving it back and being confident enough to stand it,” said Monaghan.

Executive producer John Stephens earlier told Screener TV that the Joker will return a changed man this season, so fans can guarantee that he’s going to be crazier than ever. “He's not as nice as he was before,” Stephens said. “He's definitely changed. The way we talked to Cameron about it is that somebody who's basically gone through death and come back to life has a different point of view, a much grander point of view... [He] wants to see himself on a much larger stage.”

All in all, Stephens said the Joker is “more psychotic than he was before.”

“Gotham” airs every Monday at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
