Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) has relied on a lot of people over the past few seasons of the Fox show “Gotham” to see to it that he gets the job done, and this Season 4 will not be any different.

Now that Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) is running Gotham City underground, McKenzie said Gordon has to rely on an unexpected source: another member of the Falcone family. “There’s an awful lot going on,” McKenzie told Fansided. “Season 4 opens up a few months later and into this void of villainy Penguin has asserted himself. He’s licensing crimes. He’s basically usurped the law completely and controls what crime is permitted in Gotham. Against that tide, Jim is left alone. No one is on his side including Harvey. That will lead him to find new allies and that includes Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone.”

Gordon is not afraid to bend the rules just to make sure Gotham City is safe, and McKenzie said that’s what makes his character a true hero. “He’s always going to try. I think when you stop trying, you become an actual villain,” he explained. “As long as you’re attempting to do what’s right or do what’s right for the most people, you’re going to do little bad things to do a better good.”

In a sense, McKenzie said that’s what makes Gordon similar to Batman; they both act “outside of the law, but does so for a good purpose.”

Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is slowly embracing his vigilante persona next season. However, not all is well since Bruce will be experiencing a “teenage spiral.” Executive producer John Stephen told Cinema Blend that the young man is finally going to enjoy “the elements of being a billionaire with no parents in Gotham.”

“I’d say visually, when you look at what Bruce is going to be doing this season, it’s gonna look far closer to what our conception of Batman is definitely gonna be,” he said. “You’re also going to get to see him do very specific things, certain elements like when you watch Bruce Wayne acting like a playboy.”

“Gotham” Season 4 will be released by Fox on Sept. 21, a week earlier than scheduled.
