There’s a major shake-up at “The Breakdown” in the Season 2 premiere of “Great News.”

According to the synopsis for Season 2, episode 1 of the NBC comedy series, “The Breakdown” new boss Diana St. Tropez (Tina Fey) has big plans to bring the outdated news program into the 21st century. One of Diana’s new ideas is the introduction of a new panel segment of screaming pundits — something that Chuck (John Michael Higgins) has trouble adapting to.

Meanwhile, Katie (Briga Heelan) is thrilled with Diana’s arrival on “The Breakdown” because she is exactly the kind of strong, professional female role model she hoped for. However, Katie’s mother, Carol (Andrea Martin), is immediately wary of this new influence in her daughter’s life.

During a panel at the at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour last month, series creator Tracey Wigfield — who also appears as meteorologist Beth on the sitcom — described Diana as “Sheryl Sandberg on steroids” and called the character one of the few women who is seen as truly having it all. “Diana is hopefully a really good foil to Andrea’s character,” Wigfield added (via The Hollywood Reporter). “This character kind of represents to her everything that she isn’t.”

While most of the staffers are against Diana’s plan to reinvent “The Breakdown,” Wigfield revealed that aside from Katie, there’s another character that supports Diana’s objective to overhaul the news program. “Oh, Greg (Adam Campbell) is so excited,” Wigfield told TV Insider of “The Breakdown” executive producer with a laugh. “Diana has bought him a new clipboard.”

Fey, who is also an executive producer on the series, is set to appear in the first three episodes of Season 2. The two-time Golden Globe-winning actress will then return for four more episodes later in the season. “Her presence in the show, I hope, really sets up all of our characters on really funny stories for the rest of the season,” Wigfield said of Fey.
