“Grey’s Anatomy” fans will be introduced to a slew of sexy, new scrub-sporting surgeons when Season 12 of the hit ABC medical drama returns in September. And while we’re excited to welcome the hot docs to the upcoming plot, we can’t help but wonder: Could one of these newcomers be a potential suitor for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo)?

In June, Deadline reported that Martin Henderson had scored a recurring role on the Shonda Rhimes’ series as a physician at the Seattle-based hospital. With dreamy blue eyes and a head of shaggy brown hair to boot, some fans thought that the “Off the Map” actor was cast as McDreamy 2.0 following Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) death. And if Henderson was replacing the late brain surgeon, would he also be following in Derek’s footsteps when it came to love?

Although Pompeo didn’t confirm whether Henderson’s character would be romantically linked to Meredith, she did tease the possibility of a romance for Mer later down the storyline.

“Well, it being a one-hour drama, you never know!” Pompeo teased after Entertainment Weekly asked if she would ever be able to embrace love following Derek’s death. “We’re going to start seeing Meredith begin exploring the questions of ‘Once you’ve had a perfect love and a perfect marriage, with the perfect guy, what do you do next?”

Pompeo added that part of Meredith will question “if the best parts of her love life are already behind her.”

Rhimes also toyed with the idea of adding a new romance for the show’s protagonist, but explained that a relationship is “not really the focus of what we’re doing with her right now.”

"Meredith is in a rebirth and she's evolving. I'm watching the character do what the character's doing and I'll see where it goes,” she told E! News.

“Grey’s Anatomy” will return to ABC with its Season 12 premiere on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. EDT.
