Bring on the drama! When “Grey’s Anatomy” aired its Season 12 winter finale in November, a few juicy cliffhangers were left dangling in the faces of the show’s insatiable audience. But luckily for fans, Shonda Rhimes, mastermind behind ABC’s hit medical series, helped quench their thirst for more when she teased what would happen when the scrub sporting crew returned to the small screen in February.

“It’s been really fun getting to explore Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and where she’s going and who she’s becoming,” Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly, noting that Mer’s evolution will continue when “Grey’s Anatomy” airs its midseason premiere on Feb. 11.

The executive producer elaborated that the cast and crew have been “having a blast” on set while filming episode 9, titled “The Sound of Silence.” That leaves us to believe the forthcoming premiere won’t be as heavy or as dark as the show’s midseason finale.

During episode 8, fans watched as several characters went head-to-head in some of the show’s most heated scenes to date. While Mer got into an emotional scuffle with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), things between Owen (Kevin McKidd) and newcomer Riggs (Martin Henderson) took a physical turn (which we learned has something to do with Owen’s mysterious, secret sister). Audiences were also left on the edges of their seats as the relationships of both Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) and Japril (Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew) hung on by a thread.

But it looks like those drama-filled plots will come to a head in the upcoming episode, which Rhimes described as “extraordinary and very, very powerful.”

“It certainly puts us on a path for the beginning of the second season,” she continued.

The midseason premiere will be directed by Denzel Washington, who previously directed the 2002 biopic “Antwone Fisher” and the 2007 film “The Great Debaters.” E! Online confirmed in October that the two-time Oscar winner would be making his way to the Seattle-based hospital.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 winter premiere on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
