The doctor responsible for carrying out the post mortem on the body of assassinated Guinea-Bissau President Joao Bernardo Vieira said the head of state had been savagely beaten before being shot several times, the AFP reported.

The president was hit by several bullets in the thorax and face and his body shows the marks of violent blows, the paper reported.

The doctor was quoted as saying that He was savagely beaten before being finished off with several bullets.

Vieira was gunned down on Monday morning following the death of General Tagme Na Waie, the army chief of staff.
