Emmanuel Adebayor headed in a goal, and Tottenham's Peter Crouch was sent off after two yellow cards, as Real Madrid heads into the break with a 1-0 advantage in the first leg of the quarterfinals of Champions League play at Santiago Bernabeu.

The goal by Adebayor came off a corner kick in the fourth minute that got by Luka Modric, who was near the post, and goalkeeper Gomes.

Playing a man down due to two completely unnecessary fouls by forward Peter Crouch, who picked up yellow cards the seventh and 15th minute, has put manager Harry Redknapp in a precarious position.

Tottenham already has depth issues with a number of injuries, and with star winger Gareth Bale lacking full fitness.

There was bad news for Spurs before the game even started. Aaron Lennon apparently was sick and had to be replaced by Jermaine Jenas.

Bale had a great chance in the 30th minute as he chested a ball, darted his way along the left wing, then ripped a left-footed shot than hit the side netting.

The Spurs, however, caught a break in the 42nd minute when Angel Di Maria's blistering shot was clearly blocked with the hands of Michael Dawson.
