Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) went on the run in Season 4, episode 8 of “Homeland.” After terrorist leader Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar) revealed he wanted to use Saul, the ex director of the CIA, as part of a terrorist prisoner exchange, Saul took his future into his own hands in "Halfway To A Donut."

After appearing on a live video feed in front of the CIA and members of Pakistani Intelligence and telling them not to negotiate with Haqqani, Saul saw an opening to escape. Stealing a loose nail in his prisoner chamber, Saul used it to open his handcuffs when Haqqani’s guards were preoccupied. After releasing himself and strangling one of Haqqani’s men, Saul escaped and called Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) for assistance.

“I’m not going to be recaptured by those people,” Saul told Carrie, instructing her to kill him if need be. “I will not be a pawn in this prisoner exchange. I will not play Haqqani’s game. No one should suffer for my mistakes. Let alone a whole country. You need to promise, something goes wrong, you drop a bomb on all of us… Escape or die, promise me."

While Carrie was initially hesitant to promise him anything, she eventually agreed to his plan and lead Saul to an ally nearby all the while trying to distract the ISI.

Fortunately Saul was able to find help. The U.S. ally gave him a gun and a cell phone. Despite Carrie's attempt to lead him to special forces and outs of harm's way, Taliban leaders flooded the streets in an attempt to bring Saul back to Haqqani. With his options limited, Saul considered committing suicide.

“I will not go back to those people, Carrie. We had a good run of it… They’re everywhere. You’re not saving me ... Too many,” Saul said, visibly shaken and pointing a gun at his neck.

Despite his belief that he was going to be recaptured, Carrie convinced him to keep moving by telling him that he would disappoint special forces that were awaiting his arrival. Unfortunately for Saul, Carrie’s plan differed from his own. Despite her promise to him to “escape or die,” she purposefully led him to a group of Taliban members in an attempt to give the U.S. more time to rescue him.

“You f---ing lied to me," Saul yelled. "God d--- you!”

After Saul was recaptured, Lockhart told Pakistani Intelligence to inform Haqqani that the CIA would move forward with his prisoner exchange demands.

Unfortunately for Carrie, the drama did not end with Saul. After waking up in Aasar Khan’s (Raza Jaffrey) home following her episode 7 medication-related breakdown, Aasar asked to meet her in private. He explained to her that he wasn’t responsible for tampering with her medications, and informed her that it was the U.S. Ambassador Martha Boyd’s (Laila Robbins) husband, Dennis Boyd (Mark Moses), who was responsible for the breach.

“He’s working against you," he warned Carrie. "That’s all I can say."

Season 4, episode 9 of “Homeland” airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.
