The NBC competition series “The Voice” is in its 12th season and still manages to garner plenty of interest from music lovers to aspiring artists, however, at times, the show can be difficult to follow.

For those wondering about the process of watching “The Voice” and understanding what contestants have to go through from the auditions to winning the grand prize, check out our breakdown of how the series operates below.

Auditions And Blind Auditions

Those who muster up the courage to try their hand at a spot on “The Voice” are in for a long journey should they get chosen to progress past the initial stages of the audition. However, this particular journey will be well worth its difficulty for the opportunity to work with famous music artists and the chance of winning a recording contract.

However, before singing in front of a judge, individuals have to make it through two rounds of auditions, open call auditions and call back auditions. If they get past those, they will proceed to the blind auditions where celebrity judges will pick contestants based solely on the sound of their voice.

The judges sit on rotating chairs with their backs to the contestant, however, if the judges like the voice they hear and want them on their team, they can push their button which will turn them around to face the contestant. If more than one judge turns around the contestant will have to choose whose team they would like to be on.

However, if none of the judges turn around the contestant will be eliminated.

The Battle Begins

Once all the judges fill their teams, that is when the battle between the contestants and judges begin. Judges will help the contestants on their teams develop as artists while giving them advice along with tips from celebrity advisors.

During the battle rounds, coaches must choose two team members to face off against one another and pick the one they want to advance to the next round. Each judge is allowed two steals during the battle round which they can use to place the losing artist on their team.

The Blind Battle

At this point in the competition, the remaining contestants will still face off against team members but this time around, they will not be told who they are battling against until just minutes before they go on stage. During the knockout rounds, the judges will choose the strongest competitor who will go on to compete in the live shows and the losing artist will be eliminated.

The Final Performances

During the live shows, the top contestants will compete against one another in a live broadcast. However, this time around, it is up to the televised audience to pick the winner. The two artists who receive the lowest number of votes will be eliminated each week until only one is left. That contestant will become “The Voice” and receive a recording contract.

“The Voice” Season 12 airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on NBC.
