Beyonce sent the BeyHive into a fury when she gave a new, closely cropped hairdo its debut this week. The singer, known for her long tresses and enviable hair flips, traded her signature look for a bleached-blond pixie cut. Many fans of her new cut are now combing the Web for tips on how to achieve a similar style.

Luckily for those looking to adopt a similarly bold haircut, the celebrity colorist responsible for Bey’s new hue is sharing a few secrets behind the new look. Rita Hazan told Billboard that she not only colored Beyonce’s hair but also was allowed to choose her specific color.

“When I saw her cut, I knew the color had to be soft but powerful,” Hazan said. “She wanted to keep her natural color as a grown-out look with roots to give it an edge. Thankfully, she allows me creative freedom, which is amazing for a colorist. And she lets me get to the end result in my own way, which in this case ended up a beautiful champagne blond.” She added that the warm blonde color of the hair is a perfect complement to the edgy hairstyle as well as Beyonce’s complexions and facial structure.

And if you are looking to achieve a similar color for your own pixie cut, Hazan offered a step-by-step breakdown of her coloring process for Bey to Billboard:

1. “First, I took Beyonce back to her natural color, so in a sense we were starting fresh.”

2. “Then I highlighted her strands one small area at a time. I was very precise in how I placed the highlights and wanted the color to be soft and sexy.”

3. “I chose to highlight her hair with champagne and summer blond tones. By strategically highlighting her whole head in very tiny sections, we achieved the perfect look.”

So there you have it, a little insight into getting that perfect, Beyonce-inspired hair color. Hey, if Bey can do it, you can, too!
