Hurricane Fred was declared Tuesday the second major hurricane of the year with no threat to land, according to the National Hurricane Center today.

Fred reached maximum sustained winds of near 120 miles per hour in the Atlantic Ocean and was confirmed a category 3 hurricane.

Some fluctuations in intensity are possible today but Fred is expected to weaken tomorrow, the NHC stated on its report.

Fred's eye was located at 540 miles west of the Southernmost Cape Verde islands as of 11:00 a.m. Tuesday and was moving toward the northwest at near 13 mph.
