Rob Heaps as Ezra

Rob Heaps’ Ezra changed a lot during the entire run of Season 1 of “Imposters.” And that fact became even clearer when it was revealed at the end of the finale that Ezra managed to steal the pricey engagement ring that Patrick (Stephen Bishop) once gave to Maddie (Inbar Lavi) as part of their supposed scheme to take the down the Doctor (Ray Proscia).

“I was so happy with that because [co-creators] Paul [Adelstein] and Adam [Brooks] told me, ‘Look, Ezra’s got something up his sleeve,’ but they wouldn't tell me what it was, and I wondered if it's the ring, and then it was, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s so cool. It’s so nice,’” Heaps told The Daily Dish of how he found out about his character’s final con of the season. “I think it’s just such a great journey he’s been on that he starts out as this hopeless, ineffectual dreamer and has really ended up being this really competent, edgy kind of guy with a lot more about him.”

Although Ezra technically committed a crime when he broke into Patrick’s house and ran away with the ring, Heaps said that viewers could actually find something inspirational about what his character managed to do.

“People like Ezra who have low self-esteem, it’s great to see people like that come out of their shell, gain confidence, and take a risk and pull it off and then you realize, ‘God, I’m this whole different person I didn’t dream of being,’” Heaps said. “I think this show is inspiring in that way, and it shows you, not just that people are horrible and out to get you, but actually you can be whoever you want to be. And if you don’t like parts of you, you can work on it or you can take a risk or you can become somebody else. I think that’s actually quite life-affirming.”

While Ezra felt that he somehow won after successfully stealing the ring, the character shouldn’t be complacent moving forward because he literally has an FBI dossier about him.

“I think Ezra feels like, ‘Well, the FBI’s going to blame Maddie for this. They’re going to think Maddie stole the ring. She’s going to be the priority,’” series co-creator Paul Adelstein explained to Entertainment Weekly. “So I don’t think he necessarily feels like the heat is on. Although that might dawn on him in the future, if there is a future.”

Bravo has yet to renew “Imposters” for Season 2, but Adelstein’s fellow series creator, Adam Brooks, is pretty optimistic that the network will order another season of the show.

“I think [Bravo’s] been very, very supportive of the show we wanted to make,” Brooks told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’ve been very enthusiastic about the results; it’s been building an audience. … We’re hopeful.”
