International Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 17, and New Yorkers interested in cleaning up the beaches in New York City, Long Island and Upstate New York have several locations to choose from.

The Web site for the American Littoral Society (ALS) lists beach cleanup locations and registered cleanup captains at those sites, along with their contact information.

The list also includes the dates on which cleanup efforts will take place. Some cleanups will take place on Sept. 17, while others will take place on subsequent weekends in Sept. and Oct.

Cleanup captains listed on the site have all registered through ALS New York State Beach Cleanup Coordinator Natalie Grant.

The ALS suggests that volunteers bring a hat, sunscreen, work gloves, and water.

For more information on locations, go to the ALS' New York City Web site at www.alsnyc.org, click on Beach Cleanup News in the right-hand column, and then click on Beach Cleanup Sites.
