The Quest for iPhone 5
If Sprint (S) snares Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5 this autumn, it could give the cell phone service provider a fighting chance versus AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ). And, in the interpretation of one reviewer, that would bode well for Sprint's stock. Will October become an historic month for beleaguered Sprint? REUTERS

When the entire world is counting almost every moment in anticipation of the grand release of Apple's iPad 3, iPhone 5 speculation is slowly yet steadily gaining strength among the smartphone enthusiasts.

The rumors surrounding the launch of Apple's highly anticipated next generation smartphone are gathering momentum. The iPhone frenzy is nothing new for Apple lovers but this time rumors are rife that Apple's next generation smartphone will have some stunning features which will outshine all its competitors.

While reports of speculated features are pouring in, 9to5mac informed its readers that Apple will use Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for iPhone 5.

The Web site has also mentioned that Apple's relationship with Corning, which began when Steve Jobs visited Corning Headquarters in 2006, has always shrouded in mystery. In spite of Jobs' interest in it, Corning could never make it to their supplier lists and Apple always relied on the Asian parts materials makers for its iPhone production.

Corning Gorilla Glass

Gorilla Glass, the protective window for mobile phones, PMP, or laptop display, is found in 20 percent of the world's handsets. The glass is made by the New York glass and ceramics manufacturer Corning.

The high-strength alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass is a combination of pure sand (silicon dioxide) and naturally occurring chemicals and is known for its thinness, strength and scratch resistance.

Gorilla Glass, however, is tough but not perfect, claim users and experts. Corning was trying to manufacture an improved version of the glass with more functionality from thinner designs. The latest Gorilla Glass 2 is about 20 percent stronger than its predecessor.

In the latest report, a Corning spokesperson revealed: An 8 inch advanced multi-touch LCD display prototype featuring Corning Gorilla Glass 2 as a durable, touch-sensitive, and elegant cover glass will be soon seen on our mobiles.

Now, as rumors suggest, Apple is all set to unveil its latest iPhone with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 2.

Earlier, reports suggested that the latest iPhone, which is perhaps the most-hyped in the history of Apple smartphones, may feature a special nanotech coating over its chips, which is waterproof and will let the iPhone user take calls even underwater.

Check out the list of other expected features of Apple's rumored iPhone 5.

New Material: According to a Boy Genius Report citing a close source, the Apple iPhone back plate can be made of the same material used in beer cans, and a rubberized bezel or edge.

Display (Screen Size and 3D): According to 9to5Mac, iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch (or a 4.3-inch) screen display made by LG and a different casing compared to the iPhone 4S. If rumors about the bigger screen size are true, smartphone users hooked to Android phones due to its bigger screen size may be swayed enough to shell out for the Apple device, experts believe.

The competition, however, will not be easy for iPhone as an array of large-screen smartphones have appeared in recent times. The list includes some heavyweights like Samsung Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus, HTC Titan, Droid Razr Maxx etc. But an edge-to-edge Retina Display would give Apple an edge over the Android phones. Apple might also replace the qHD Retina Display with a TrueHD one. And the latest rumor suggests that iPhone 5 display will be protected by the latest version of Corning Gorilla Glass.

Various rumors indicate that Apple might also introduce an amazing technology that would allow the user to control a 3D interface using touch-free motion based gestures. But chances are very less that Apple will use it in iPhone 5.

Quad-Core Processor - While a series of Android phones are being released with quad-core processor and Apple itself is expected to provide the same quad-core processor in the iPad 3, it is certain that iPhone 5 will be equipped with a quad-core A6 processor with 1GB of RAM.

Battery: An improved battery could be Apple's ace card against Android phones. Android users often complain about the battery drain problem. iPhone 5 is expected to have a flat battery - thinner and more powerful.

4G Connectivity & NFC - Apple is certain to pack Qualcomm's latest Gobi v5 chips. Gobi v5 is a universal chip for all networks featuring Long Term Evolution technology, EV-DO and GSM compatibility. iPhone 5 is also expected to feature NFC support to allow simple transactions, data exchange, and connections with a touch.

iOS 6 with Siri 2.x - Apple is reportedly developing iOS 6. The company is likely to release its latest iOS with iPad 3 on the same day.

iOS 6 is expected to be featured in iPhone 5 too. Another rumor that can make the experience merrier for the iPhone lover is that the Apple is planning to launch Siri 2.0 with the new smartphone. Currently Siri is in its beta version and the updated version will have additional language support such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish, expect the Apple lovers.

Better Battery - With iPhone 5, Apple is expected to address the battery problem that the iPhone 4S users have been complaining about since its release. Rumors confirm that Apple will introduce a better battery in iPhone 5.

Wireless Charging: One of the best features that iPhone enthusiasts can expect in iPhone 5 is the inductive wireless charging technology for the device, which would enable the phone to charge the battery without the use of cables or plugs.
