Iran Hijab Law: Iranian Woman Breaks Two Laws With Uncovered Dance On Tehran Subway

A video surfaced Wednesday showing a woman dancing aboard a Tehran subway train without a head covering, breaking two laws in conservative Iran. It is the latest, and perhaps most provocative act, of female rebellion in the Islamic republic. The woman made no effort to hide her identity as she danced to a song by a British pop group calling for female empowerment, but her identity is currently unknown.

The one-minute video shows the woman energetically dancing across the train car and twisting on the subway poles with “Salute” by the all-female British group Little Mix blasting on a boombox. The lyrics of “Salute” strongly advocate for women to stand up to oppression: "Sisters we are everywhere; Warriors, your country needs you If you ready ladies, better keep steady; Ready, aim, shoot it; Don't need ammunition, on a mission; And we'll hit you with the truth; Divas, Queens, we don't need no man, salute! You think we're just pretty things; You couldn't be more wrong (We standing strong, we carry on); Knock us but we keep moving on (we're moving up, yeah); Can't stop a hurricane, ladies it's time to awake (yeah!)" Most of the bystanders avert their attention, but one woman holds the dancer’s camera to film her as she dances. The video was uploaded to the popular My Stealthy Freedom Facebook page, where Iranian women regularly post photos of themselves without head coverings. It’s unclear whether the person filming the dance was a part of the act.

Six young Iranians were arrested and sentenced to receive 91 lashes and jail time in September for recording a video of them dancing to the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” earlier this year. The women in the video appeared without head coverings and danced close to the men. The six young people confessed during interviews on Iranian state television and said they were actors tricked into filming the video for an audition of some kind, according to BBC.

Those laws requiring women to wear the hijab and prohibiting dancing have been in place since the 1979 Iranian revolution, according to Radio Free Europe.
