Hurricane Isaac neared landfall on the coast of Louisiana early Tuesday evening, the National Hurricane Center reported.

At 6 p.m. CDT (7 p.m. Eastern), its eye was just 15 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving northwest at 8 mph, with 80 mph sustained winds making it a Ctaegory 1 hurricane.
