It was thought that Jamie Vardy’s fairytale season was beginning to peter out after just one goal in his last eight appearances. But the Leicester City striker provided further, spectacular, evidence against Liverpool at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday that he is no flash in the pan.

With Leicester goalless heading to the hour mark against one of only two teams to beat Leicester in the Premier League this season, the England international broke the deadlock with one of the goals of the season. Racing onto a long pass forward from Riyad Mahrez, Vardy was faced by Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, but from an improbable angle outside the corner of the penalty box, he unleashed an unstoppable dripping effort that soared past Simon Mignolet and into the visitors’ net.

Having previously found the net just five times in the Premier League, the goal was Vardy’s 17th in the in an astonishing season for the 29-year-old. And it was quickly followed by his 18th to put Leicester City two goals to the good and send them on the way to another victory. With the win Leicester maintained their three-point advantage at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City and moved five points clear of Arsenal.
