“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez always has a fun time filming with Joseph Sanders, the kid who plays her onscreen son Mateo.

Rodriguez even shared a cute behind-the-scenes moment with Sanders on Instagram. They pair took a selfie with their tongues sticking out.

That particular scene was taken on Chapter Fifty-Five, the episode after Jane’s husband Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) died. It was during the fake wedding of Rogelio Dela Vega (Jamie Camil) and Darci Factor (Justina Machado).

Dier told Entertainment Weekly that his exit from the show was quite heartbreaking, but he did learn something important after Michael’s death. “It was pretty sad. That’s another thing I took away. Just taking for granted assuming that you’re going to live for that [long]. It’s living in the moment and appreciating it as much as you possibly can. I took that away too. It feels like it’s a very spiritual thing to go through for me,” he said.

Dier also learned how to “love the people in your life as much as you possibly can, because you never know [when your time will come],” and he vowed never to take them for granted.

As for Jane, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman said she learned some valuable things, too. Jane, who is a constant idealist, had to adjust to her life as a widow and learn to move on even after the love of her life passed away.

“Her life has changed in every way. And yet, she has had to carry on. She’s a little older now, she’s certainly less idealistic and a little more pragmatic. But she still has dreams, and hopes and fears, and beyond that — you’ll see!” she told Deadline.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
