Even though the main focus of The CW show “Jane the Virgin” is Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), people can’t help but be drawn to her family and friends too. Rogelio De La Vega (Jaime Camil) is one of those scene-stealers.

As vain and narcissistic as he might be, fans still love him. And Camil told DCIST that it’s thanks to the “brilliant” dialogue the writers come up with for Rogelio.

“They make him very balanced. For some reason, when he says ‘I want my daughter to have the pleasure of knowing me,’ you don’t want to slap him for being a pretentious prick. You feel like hugging him,” Camil said. “I think that’s the perfect balance that Jennie [Snyder Urman, the creator and showrunner] and her amazing team of writers create with the character. He’s very vain and very superficial, but at the same time he’s very endearing and full of heart.”

Camil feels blessed to be a part of “Jane the Virgin,” since playing Rogelio does not really feel like work. Camil said the entire cast and crew treat each other as family, so it’s always like a “party” when they get together.

The DC Metro Theater Arts asked Camil about the most fun moment he has ever had on the set. Since there had been so many, Camil said it’s almost impossible to answer that question. “Do we have two hours?” he jokingly replied. “Actually, it’s an impossible thing to pinpoint because it’s such a happy set full of happy people. Every single day we laugh and tell stories and share funny moments. Every time we get together it’s like a party.”

Next season, Camil’s character is going to navigate through the highs and lows of fatherhood since his ex-girlfriend, Darci Factor (Justina Mechado), is pregnant with his child. It’s going to be a challenge for both him and his new wife, Xo (Andrea Navedo), to deal with a person he does not like and raise a child together.

Urman told Entertainment Tonight of this new challenge: “It’s going to give us a lot of story potential, a lot of conflict, but also a lot of real obstacles that they’ll have to fight through to preserve their marriage. This is a marriage that they have chosen and really worked hard for so they’re going to be in that mindset and it’s going to be more challenging than what they thought their honeymoon period would be.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 will return on Oct. 13. at 9 p.m. EDT.
