The popular theory surrounding the “Jane the Virgin” Narrator is that he is actually Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) son Mateo all grown up, sharing the story of his family telenovela style.

Show creator Jennie Snyder Urman has already teased that they have been dropping hints about the Narrator’s identity since Season 1, but they will only reveal his real identity during the last episode of the series.

Even though several fans have already formed theories concerning his identity, Anthony Mendez, the voice actor behind the Narrator, told Latina that they will still be blown away by the big reveal. “I’m looking forward to see how it’s handled. I always refer back to ‘Gossip Girl,’ where at the end they reveal who the narrator [is] and it wasn’t who we thought it was,” he said. “I think that could be done here, where I wouldn’t have to be on screen because it literally isn’t really me. I’m really looking forward to how they are going to reveal that, because I think that most people are going to be very, very surprised on how that turns out.”

When he first took on the role, Mendez said he made a conscious choice to tie the Narrator to the lead character, Jane Gloriana Villanueva. He apparently made a good call because Snyder later told him the Narrator indeed has ties to Jane.

“My choice had always been that he was tied to Jane in a certain way. Many of those choices, I don’t reveal to anybody. Those are just choices that kind of ground the performance of who this character is. I always understood that while he had a connection to Jane, he doesn’t perform or he doesn’t talk to the audience, otherwise it would just be reading,” he said.

Mendez told TV Guide in a separate interview that he formed his character as a “father” figure in Jane’s life. Since she already has a strong female support system, Mendez said all she needed was some male guidance.

“So I kind of took a paternal, grandfather, uncle kind of role. Then I found out Jane was writing stories and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s a storyteller.’ But there is a certain parallel between the choices I made in interpreting the character and what she had in mind. I think that clicked when she heard it,” he said.

“Jane the Virgin” has been renewed for Season 4.
