Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward had to leave Wednesday’s game after he was hit in the jaw with a 90 mph fastball thrown by the New York Mets’ pitcher Jonathan Niese. Twitter went wild after the crazy throw, which seemed to be unintentional, and gifs of the incident went viral on the Web.

It looked as if the ball had hit the side of Heyward’s helmet since he turned as quickly as possible when he saw the rogue pitch coming his way, but apparently it wasn’t fast enough. The star player, 24, dropped to the ground after the ball made contact with his face and Niese walked to the Brave player’s side seemingly to see if he was OK as catcher Travis d'Arnaud tenderly helped him to the ground.

It didn’t take more than a moment for the Mets trainer to decide that Heyward had to come out of the game and he was helped off the field. Even though the Mets and the Braves have a pretty intense rivalry, it’s not thought that Niese tried to hit Heyward on purpose.

Heyward was said to be spitting up blood, according to Twitter posts, and the Braves official Twitter account wrote that the team was “Praying @JasonHeyward [was] okay after being hit with a pitch.”

According to CBSSports.com, the 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .254/.348/.426 (110 OPS+) with 13 home runs in 94 games before Wednesday’s incident. This isn’t Heyward’s first injury this season either. The player was out for three weeks after he needed an appendectomy and he also missed a few more games last months due to a problem with his hamstring.
