She died at Mount Sinai Hospital a week after she stopped breathing during a nonsurgical procedure in New York City. Her career spanned over five decades and made millions laugh. She was an Emmy award-winning actress, best-selling author and host of "Fashion Police." Rivers made the query, "Who are you wearing," famous during her red carpet coverage.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," daughter Melissa said in a statement, according to People. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated."

Fans and celebrities posted their condolences on Twitter after the star's death. Rivers touched people from Sharon Osbourne to Bette Midler.
