Although July 4th weekend is typically filled with trips to the beach, barbecues and long car rides to amusement parks, there’s no shame in trying to keep things local and heading to the movie theater.

Not only is there a good chance that the theaters may be empty due to holiday festivities, but there are some pretty cool movies playing over the upcoming weekend. Before heading to the theater, check out some of the films being released during July 4th weekend 2017 below.

“Baby Driver” - R

Released on Wednesday, a few days ahead of July 4th weekend, this films offers you an action-packed thrill ride. Follow the story of Baby, played by Ansel Elgort, who is a talented getaway driver that dreams of one day leaving behind his life of crime.

“Despicable Me 3” - PG

If you are looking for something a little more family friendly you may want to go with the popular animated movie which is returning to theaters for a third film. After getting fired from his job, Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, returns to life as a villain. In the process of his journey, he discovers that he has a twin brother and prepares for an epic battle with 1980s child star-turned-supervillain Balthazar Bratt, voiced by Trey Parker.

“Darkness Rising” - R

This film has a limited release, so you may want to check with your local theaters before heading out. If it is playing near you, get ready for a scary movie you won’t forget. The film follows the story of a young woman who survived a family massacre caused by her mother. She is later forced to return to her childhood home in order to deal with her past and a deadly force.

“The House” - R

Comedy is one way to celebrate Fourth of July weekend and this film starring “Saturday Night Live” alums Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler is sure to bring plenty of laughs. The film follows two parents who realize that they don’t have enough money to send their daughter off to college. The couple then begins to run an illegal casino in their house in order to come up with the cash.

“The Little Hours” - R

Based off of “The Decameron” by Giovanni Boccaccio, the film follows a gardener, played by Dave Franco, who works at a covenant. Living on the property are three nuns portrayed by Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Kate Micucci, who have no problem committing mortal sins in the 14th century. The young man struggles to keep his cover as a deaf mute as the nuns relentlessly pursue him for more than just his gardening skills.

“Inconceivable” - R

Although the Fourth of July is all about celebration, there is nothing wrong with adding a little fear to the festivities. Those hoping to take a break from family festivities and dive into something that will get your heart-pounding should check out this film. The movie follows Angela who befriends a young woman named Katie. Although the two start out as friends, Katie becomes obsessed with Angela’s family and her behavior quickly turns from worrying to dangerous.
