Justin Bieber took his 18th birthday Thursday as an opportunity to rally his fans on Twitter and asked them to donate to the Charity: Water. In doing so his fans topped the Guinness World Record for the number of tweets sent out within 24 hours, according to Mashable.

I want to use my bday to help other, if u want please donate $18 to@charitywater on my 18th bday! #GiveBack. Bieber tweeted on Thursday.

Last year for my birthday, you gave me the best birthday present I could ever ask for -- you donated $47,148 to bring clean water to over 2,357 people! the teen star wrote on his charity: water page. I'm so thankful for what we were able to accomplish together. This year, I want to do it again!

Early results from Bieber's Website creators, AgencyNet, show that fans have already surpassed the world record of 209,711 mentions and are currently on 214,900 mentions with 11 years still to go.

Charity: Water is a non-profit organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

The previous world record was beaten by the Beat Cancer Everywhere campaign in 2009. The Guinness book of records is yet to verify the new record that was set by Bieber fans.

The world record target initiative was started by AgencyNet, which urged fans to retweet this message: Please RT-setting a world record for @justinbieber.

I'm pleased and frankly shocked that our record stood for nearly two-and-a-half years, given the rapid evolution of social media, Everywhere managing partner and cancer survivor Tamara Knechtel told Mashable. We really set a precedent in proving that social media could be used for social good and we raised $70,000 along the way for cancer-serving non-profits.

Bieber has 17.8 million Twitter followers and 40.8 million likes on Facebook.

Birthday Treats

Meanwhile, Bieber splashed out on his birthday, according to a report obtained by TMZ. The teen apparently went parachuting, then went to a fancy dinner, followed by a party and to top it off he will apparently be buying two mansions.

Sources have told TMZ that the star has been on the real estate hunt in L.A. for some time and has narrowed his search down to a short-list of three properties. According to the report the cheapest of the three options is $14 million.
