The Kentucky Derby is just days away, with some of the finest thoroughbreds converging on Churchill Downs in Louisville on May 6. There are currently two contenders sharing the top betting odds for the 143rd running of the Derby.

Classic Empire, trained by Mark Casse, and Always Dreaming, trained by Todd Pletcher, have the strongest odds (5/1) of winning the Run for the Roses.

Casse, who also has State of Honor in the race, has never had a thoroughbred win the Kentucky Derby, while Pletcher is trying to end a seven-year drought since Super Saver won in 2010.

Pletcher may pass D. Wayne Lukas for most total entries in the history of the Derby. Aside from Always Dreaming, he has four other contenders: Tapwrit, Malagacy, Patch and Battalion Runner.

In 2016, Nyguist won the Derby with 3/1 morning-line odds.
