Kirstie Alley just took to social media to share her thoughts about the recent mass shooting in Los Angeles. The 66-year-old comedian apparently thinks that psychiatric drugs could be instigator of the heinous act. She even claims that the same substance is the common denominator among all lethal shootings in the history of the country.

The “Cheers” alum shared her two cents on the incident on Monday via Twitter. “We have to solve the mystery of why there are no ‘shooters’ or almost 0 before the 1980s. I know one common denominator other than guns,” she wrote.

She continued her statement by putting the blame on prescription medication. “One additional common denominator of ‘shooters’ is U.S.A.’s mass usage of psychiatric drugs. A % do have side effects of violence and suicide,” she said.

Immediately after tweeting her opinion, Alley received backlash from social media users who maintained that psychiatric medication has nothing to do with the shootings. One commented: “Use of psych meds has increased in Australia, yet NO mass shootings in last 20 yrs & suicides by gun have dropped 57%. Know why? BANNED GUNS.” Another slammed the “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” actress, saying, “As per usual, you are utterly clueless. Just stop embarrassing yourself.”

Despite getting called out for her tweet, Alley stood by her statement and went as far as claiming that it was based on statistics and not merely her opinion. “Yes I did say it. It happens to be a common denominator in shooters... not my opinion. Statistics based,” she wrote.

Apart from the lack of evidence to prove her claim, the avowed Scientologist was also criticized for her statement as there haven’t been any reports saying that Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock was taking any sort of psychiatric drugs at the time of the incident, as pointed out by Us Weekly.

Following the backlash that she received for her comment on the Las Vegas shooting, Alley voiced her sympathy toward the family and friends of the victims. “I send PRAYERS to people lost & families effected [sic] by this tragic shooting,” she wrote.

She reiterated the same message in another tweet, saying: “UTMOST sympathy 4 the victims & their loved ones.”

On Sunday night, Las Vegas became the center of a harrowing attack when Paddock engaged in a shooting spree at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. At least 58 people have reportedly died, while over 500 others were left injured.
