Although Princess Isabella of France (Sabrina Bartlett) is already set to marry Prince Lluis of Catalonia, the Catalans are not willing to fight alongside the French in a potential war against England.

In a sneak peek from Season 1, episode 3 of History’s “Knightfall,” De Nogaret (Julian Overden) meets with the ambassador of Catalonia and asks if they would support France in the event England wages war against them.

“Catalan blood will not be spilled defending French soil,” Rodrigo of Catalonia (Enrique Arce) tells De Nogaret.

When De Nogaret points out that Catalonia is the reason why France may go to war with England, Rodrigo’s assistant (Marcos Franz) suddenly joins the conversation and asks, “How many troops would you require?”

Surprised by Rodrigo’s assistant butting in the conversation, De Nogaret asks, “Does your cupbearer discuss military strategy?”

Rodrigo then formally introduces his assistant Bernard to De Nogaret, prompting the latter to also introduce his assistant to the Catalans. “This is Nicholas, my assistant,” De Nogaret says. “He fetches me wine and wipes my behind when I need him to, and he doesn’t speak out of turn.”

After throwing shade at Bernard, De Nogaret bluntly asks Rodrigo if Catalonia’s reluctance to assist France is because of his personal opinion on him. And the Catalan ambassador says, “Not at all. [But] as I said we will support you but we will not die for you.”

While Bernard convincingly appears to be Rodrigo’s assistant in the sneak peek, Franz’s IMDb page reveals that Bernard is actually Prince Lluis of Catalonia.

Elsewhere in the next episode, according to the synopsis for the hour, Landry (Tom Cullen) and Tancrede (Simon Merrells) travel to investigate the Holy Grail’s whereabouts following an order given to them by Pope Boniface (Jim Carter).

But the Templars aren’t the only ones who are looking for the Grail. After De Nogaret learned from Gawain (Pádraic Delaney) Season 1, episode 2 that the Pope went all the way to Paris to discuss matters about the long-lost Grail, King Philip IV of France’s (Ed Stoppard) right-hand man also tasks his minions to find the Grail before the Templars do. “We must recover the Grail first for ourselves,” De Nogaret says in a trailer teasing the rest of the show’s freshman run.

“Knightfall” Season 1, episode 3, titled “The Black Wolf and The White Wolf,” airs on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 10 p.m. EST on History.
