Connor Bishop Zion has been identified as the man killed by a sheriff’s deputy in Laguna Niguel, Calif., Tuesday night after he stabbed three people: Zion’s mother, his roommate and another Orange County sheriff’s deputy.

Zion, 21, of Laguna Niguel, was shot and killed after the stabbings around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. The sheriff’s deputy he stabbed suffered injuries to his arms, not considered life-threatening, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department told NBC Los Angeles.

The name of the stabbed deputy was not released, but he was described as a 7-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, according to KABC.

"At some point during the course of the response, one of the deputies was stabbed by the suspect, and in turn, another deputy shot and fatally wounded the suspect," Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department told the Los Angeles television station.

Zion’s mother and roommate were identified as the other two people stabbed.

The Laguna Niguel shooting unfolded in a typically calm area of the neighborhood, according to the Times. Officers arrived after receiving calls of a man with a knife.

Witness Yobani Salas told KABC, “We just heard some police come in with their tires screeching and everything, then we heard a little bit of yelling after that, and then a whole [magazine] go off of the bullets, one after another, nonstop.”

The stabbings are still under investigation.
