For the first time in the “Legends of Tomorrow,” a non-superhero main character is boarding the Waverider — Nick Zano’s Nate Heywood, the grandchild of Justice Society of America’s Commander Steel.

In the comics, Nate followed his grandfather's footsteps as a superhero and became Citizen Steel, and as revealed on the show’s synopsis for Season 2, the CW’s incarnation of the character will have the same story arc.

Executive producer Phil Klemmer recently talked to KSiteTV and explained why they decided to introduce Nate as an ordinary character instead of bringing him into the group as an established superhero.

“Nate Heywood is the first non-superhero [on the show],” Klemmer said. “The fact that we inherited all of these characters from other shows was great, because everybody wanted to watch our show; the downside of that was that there was no origin story to tell, because you knew who Ray Palmer [Brandon Routh] was. You know who Sara Lance [Caity Lotz] was.”

“We want to meet a guy that nobody knows; in fact, who doesn’t even know that he is destined to become a superhero, because that gives you the first act of the Spider-Man movie,” the exec producer continued. “Tobey Maguire was like, ‘Oh my God! I can do this! But I’m not great at doing it! And oh, I’m using it for selfish purposes, but should I use it for good?’ You want a neophyte; a guy who’s been dropped into this world from the regular world, to point out the absurdity and the fun, so that was why we wanted to have Nate becomes a superhero within Season 2.”

“He’s sort of our audience's point of view,” added Klemmer of Nate in a separate interview with TVLine.

Although Nate will first appear as a plain civilian on the show, the newcomer will have huge mission right off the bat.

“After the defeat of the immortal villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) and the corrupt Time Masters who colluded with him, a new threat emerges,” reads a portion of the Season 2 synopsis. “Dr. Nate Heywood, an unconventional and charming historian, is thrust into the action upon making a shocking discovery — the Legends are scattered throughout time. Nate must find a way to rescue Season 1’s beloved team of heroes and rogues.”
