Actress Anne Hathaway reveals that she had to partake in a near starvation diet in order to drop 25 pounds for her role in the upcoming film "Les Miserables."

The 30-year-old plays Fantine, a dying prostitute in the 19th century French underclass. Hathaway had to shave her head and lose a lot of weight in order to embody the role without props or special effects, the Daily Mail reports.

She detailed in an interview with Vogue magazine that she initially dropped 10 pounds on a strict cleanse diet before the movie began filming. She then lost an additional 15 pounds during a two-week filming break, sustaining herself on just two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day.

“I had to be obsessive about it -- the idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience -- and I don't judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts,” Hathaway told Vogue.

“It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway.”

Hathaway, who graces the cover of Vogue’s December issue, explained that she struggled with returning to herself and everyday life after filming for the movie concluded.

“I was in such a state of deprivation -- physical and emotional,” she said.

“When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed. It took me weeks till I felt like myself again.”

Les Miserables is scheduled to release on Dec. 25. It is based on the musical, Les Miserables, which is in turn, based on the novel by French poet and playwright, Victor Hugo.
