As the counting for Kerala assembly elections are underway, the Congress-led UDF is having a slight edge over the ruling LDF in the state after the first hour of counting of votes of the April 13 Assembly polls.

As early trends show, UDF aspirants were leading in 72 segments and LDF candidates in 64 out of 140 seats.

While LDF is putting up a strong showing in Palakkad and Kannur, UDF has an edge in Kottayam and Wayanad districts.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the rival fronts appeared evenly poised.

Prominent LDF candidates ahead in the race include Chief Minister and CPI-M veteran V S Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

The LDF swept the polls in 2006 grabbing 98 seats in the 140-member House, which was almost the reverse of the 2001 tally. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the LDF received a drubbing as the UDF grabbed 16 of the 20 Parliament seats from Kerala.
