A man has been accused of fatally stabbing a dog during an altercation with one of the pet's owners in New York City's Central Park.

Police are reportedly on the lookout for the suspected stabber.

The attack took place at around 8:30 p.m. on June 17, according to New York Daily News.

A 43-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man were walking their two dogs — a German shepherd pitbull mix named Eli and a chihuahua — at the time. The couple had both dogs on a leash.

The suspect was with his three dogs in the park at the same time. His dogs were possibly pit bull terriers, and none of them were on a leash.

The suspect's dogs ambushed the couple's pets and started biting them, witnesses reportedly claimed.

An argument ensued as the 43-year-old woman tried to get the accused man's dogs off her pets. The suspect then brandished a switchblade and allegedly stabbed Eli multiple times.

A witness recalled seeing a significant amount of blood around the wounded pet.

"There was a dog on the ground that was dead, a lot of blood around it, a guy was trying to do something — and three other pit bulls without leashes...three pit bulls around him," a witness said, as per ABC7NY.

One of Eli's owners managed to record a clip of the suspect running away from the scene after leaving the dog with stab wounds.

Eli was taken to an animal clinic, but the canine did not survive.

Officials are on the lookout for the suspect, who was last seen wearing an orange shirt, orange hat and blue jeans.

"I just can't believe someone would attack an innocent dog. I don't know what's wrong with people — it's so heartbreaking," dog walker Megan Stafford said about the incident, according to the outlet.

In an unrelated incident reported last year, a Siberian husky was killed and skinned by a Montana woman, Amber Rose, who erroneously thought the pooch was a wolf. Rose posted pictures of the carcass online and claimed she got a "predator wolf pup," but netizens pointed out that she was actually mistaking a dog for a wolf.
