Manchester United required a late, injury time header from Ashley Young to spare them the blushes against FC Basel in the Group C encounter of the UEFA Champions League.

The Enlgish champions were up 2-0 at half-time thanks to the finishing of Danny Welbeck, who was given the nod ahead of Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov. He scored his first in the 16 minute and the second 80 seconds later as United surged comfortably at Old Trafford. However, but for some wasteful finishing from Basel, United could well have found themselves with a goal's deficit at half-time.

Improved finishing in the second half saw Basel get the equalizer when Fabian Frei and his namesake Alexander Frei scored within two minutes of each other. Things proved interesting in the late stages as a foul by Antonio Valencia in the box saw Basel receive a penalty. Alexander Frei stepped up and powered it in, leaving Old Trafford in a stunned dizzy.

However, on the 90th minute, Young was at hand to head in Nani's cross and claim a point for United. Welbeck could have become the hero of the day had he glanced his header in. However, that would have proved to be a less than deserved win for United.

Basel now leads group C with 4 points followed by Benfica with the same points. Man United are thrid with two points and Champions League debutants Otelul Galati finished the group.
