Athletic Bilbao central midfielder Ander Herrera appears set to join Manchester United on a £28.8 million deal, but other prominent names have been linked to the Red Devils this week with much of the world’s attention focused on the looming knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup.

After a miserable 2013-2014 season, United might be poised for a major overhaul with a reported £200 million war chest to reverse their fortunes.

In recent weeks, multiple British tabloid reports have surfaced that new manager Louis van Gaal, who is currently overseeing the Netherlands in Brazil, had hopes of Dutch winger Arjen Robben joining United. The 30-year-old has been a stalwart for both the Netherlands and Bayern Munich.

While Robben seems like an ideal fit at Old Trafford, it would be a stretch to see such a move happen in this summer. And even Robben thinks so.

"Manchester United? That's not an option. I am staying at Bayern Munich. Period,” Robben told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf in May.

"And I cannot imagine that Bayern would want to sell me.

"I have only just renewed my contract and we are happy with each other. It would have been a different story had I been unhappy.”

A more plausible option for Manchester United might be Angel di Maria. The Real Madrid winger has basically conceded that his days at the Bernabeu could be numbered. However, Di Maria remains focused on the World Cup with Argentina advancing to the Round of 16.

“I've asked my agent not to tell me anything about the talks he's having,” Di Maria said this week, according to The Independent.

“I don't know what's going to happen with my career. I don't want to know anything about my future right now.”

Manchester United may have to compete with Arsenal for the 26-year-old, according to reports. In 2013, Arsenal were heavily linked to Di Maria, but decided instead on Mesut Ozil in the London club’s record £42 million move.

Meanwhile, Nani might be exiting Old Trafford, as Daily Star reports that Inter Milan are prepared to offer £12 million for the Portugal star. Nani, a prominent winger who joined United when he was 20, has also been linked to Arsenal, Benfica, Juventus, and AC Milan in recent months.

While there has been considerable attention afforded to the United attack, Van Gaal may be keen to bolstering the defense. Hector Moreno, who has starred for Mexico in recent days, is on United’s radar. According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the 26-year-old Espanyol center back has also generated interest from Tottenham and Hull City.

Moreno, who is valued at £8 million, played under Van Gaal when the two were at Dutch club AZ.

"Moreno is leaving Espanyol. He wants to leave and we're looking for another team in Europe," the player's agent said in May.
