Two people, including a patrol officer, were shot to death in a downtown hotel in Memphis while police responded to what appeared to be a domestic incident.

The suspect has been arrested, Memphis Police Dept. Sgt. Tara Rudolph said, without divulging more details.

Officer Timothy Warren was hit by gunfire when he arrived at the hotel after police were alerted about an incident of firing at the hotel. Warren, who joined the department in 2003, leaves behind a wife and two small children, CNN reported.

The hotel, where the incident took place, was packed with tourists for the Fourth of July holiday, AP reported.

When police arrived at the hotel, they found a person fatally shot. Officer Warren was hit by bullet immediately afterward, according to reports. The arrested suspect was treated for minor injuries, the police said.
