A World Cup match between Mexico and Croatia turned violent on Monday as fans from both sides engaged in a massive brawl in the stands.

The fight, which occurred at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil, broke out shortly after Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the match's 72nd minute, Deadspin reports.

It's unclear why the two fan groups came to blows, but men from each faction threw punches and beers at each other. Eventually, stadium security arrived on the scene and managed to bring the brawl to an end. A few additional shoves were exchanged, but the altercation was effectively defused.

Eventually, Mexico added two more goals to their total and won the match, 3-1. They'll advance to the knockout stage, while Croatia's loss assured their elimination from the 2014 World Cup.
