Microsoft's Kinect sensor systems sold ten million units since their launch in November to grab the Guinness world record for the fastest selling consumer electronics device.

In the process, Microsoft scored over evergreen consumer technology pioneer Apple, as sales figures of Apple's iPhone and iPad paled in comparison. The sales figures outstrip those of both Apple's iPhone and iPad when launched, BBC said in a report, quoting the Guinness awards body.

Microsoft launched its Xbox add-on Kinect, a controller-free gaming device, in November. Kinect, which brought a different experience into motion sensing gaming technology, uses four microphones and a depth camera, color motion camera and a distance sensor to track a user's presence in the room.

Microsoft said the success of the Kinect had a knock-on effect on the sale stand-alone Kinect games, according to Reuters.
