The 'renovations' of the old Kashgar center in Xinjiang province is a prime example of China's modernizing campaigns in regions which have significant number of ethnic minorities.
However, many residents of the oasis in Western China have mixed feelings about the disappearance of the narrow streets and adobe homes once hailed as the best surviving example of Central Asian architecture, Reuters reported.
