The family of Egypt’s embattled President Hosni Mubarak has not fled the country, according to a source in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo who spoke to CBS News.

Rumors and speculation have been flying that the accelerating turmoil on the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities have compelled the Mubaraks to depart the nation, much like the ex-President of Tunisia recently fled to Saudi Arabia.

The U.S.-based Arabic website Akhbar al-Arab and certain other sources had claimed that President Mubarak’s son, Gamal, and his wife Suzanne and flown to Cairo.

However, the Cairo embassy source told CBS News that there is no reason to believe that this is true. Gamal, the source noted, was educated in London and travels a lot.
