Stocks extended their advance in late trading on Monday, with the Nasdaq briefly up more than 1 percent as chip makers rallied on optimism ahead of earnings reports from technology bellwethers.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 75.68 points, or 0.75 percent, to 10,173.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index <.SPX> rose 8.20 points, or 0.77 percent, to 1,073.08. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 20.58 points, or 0.94 percent, to 2,199.63.

Stocks were lifted by solid earnings from Halliburton and a strong order outlook from Boeing .
